2017 helicopter mapping planning

In preparation for a big helicopter mapping trip next year, Watto (Sarah Watson) and Hammo (Steve Hamilton) went on a four day recce trip out to Kiriwirri with the Punmu rangers. The team consisted of ten men and women rangers and elders who visited the Papuly area for a day, before heading up to the Percival Lakes.

During the trip, the rangers visited and ground-truthed nine sites, one of which was new to the Wanyja database. Nyanjabayi and Mulyatingki told the rangers stories about these places and everyone helped find pujiman (bushman) artefacts, such as jiwa and wakura (grinding stones).

The aim of the trip was to determine if the track was good enough for the fuel trailer and also to find suitable camp sites for a large and extended trip. This went very well, with all the rangers working well together. At least nine camels were shot on the trip and a rabbit warren was located by the team. Fresh mankarr (Bilby) tracks and burrows were also found and their positions were recorded. This trip was very helpful for preparing for next year’s big trip.
