Checking in with Martu
Over the past couple of months waru man (Gareth), Tracy and Patto have been visiting Punmu, Kunawarritji and Parnngurr to ask Martu how KJ is going and to celebrate some of KJ’s achievements over the past year. They were really keen to talk to Jigalong community members but the trip was canceled because of a pinyi (funeral).
The meetings are an important time to share KJ’s achievements and ask Martu what’s good about KJ, what could be done better, what doesn’t work and what Martu would like KJ to do in the future. KJ has been asking questions like this nearly every year so it can listen to Martu and continue to improve and grow in the ways Martu see as important. If KJ delivers the programs Martu think are important and then stop each year to think about how we are going and what could be improved then KJ will get better and better.
Some of the big messages that were heard this year was that Martu want more opportunities; in the ranger program, in the Leadership program and in Puntura-ya Ninti program. They want to hear more of the stories KJ has recorded over the years, go to new places, have longer trips and hear more about what’s going on with the board and in other teams.
Overall everyone said KJ was going really well. In particular they enjoyed the visits to community by the leadership group, the school program in Punmu is fantastic, the ranger program is strong and providing lots of opportunities for elders to share their knowledge with younger Martu.
