IPA Consultation Project
Over the past few months KJ and WDLAC held joint consultations about a possible Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) in Martu country. The consultations were held in every Martu community as well as Fitzroy, Bidyadanga, Warralong, Nullagine, Hedland and Newman.
Martu attending the consultations watched a movie about IPAs and talked in small groups to provide feedback and raise questions. There was strong support in those consultations for an IPA as well as for potentially including Karlamilyi at a later stage.
A potential IPA was discussed at the WDLAC AGM in Punmu in October and more discussions will be had between KJ and WDLAC leading up to a final decision by Martu in 2017.
