Listening to the old stories
KJ has a rich collection of old stories available for Martu to listen to. On the leadership coastal walk a few weeks ago, the participants listened to stories from Nyaparu (Billy) Gibbs recorded in 1987 at Punmu.
Being able to provide access to the old stories to the younger generation is a very important part of the Puntura-ya Ninti work. This year the team is planning to add a number of stories to the CAL computers along with the movies for Martu to be able to access.
Fiona Webb (Princess) joined the Puntura-ya Ninti team this year to complete an oral history recording project. Fiona will be working with some of the older people. Some Martu have memories of mission days where people gathered and were reunited with family when they first came in from the desert. During the mission days, Martu went to school and worked in Jigalong or on nearby stations. There are many stories to record which will be preserved in the archive for all Martu to listen to in the future.
