Martu attend the Yule River Annual Bush Meeting
In September, two of the Martu Women’s Leadership program participants, Annabelle Landy and Elstreia Hale accompanied by Yvonne Mkandara, women’s leadership program coordinator, travelled 430 km to Yule River to take part in the annual bush meeting.
The Yule River annual bush meeting is a gathering that brings together Pilbara traditional owners to talk about issues that affect the development of their communities, culture and heritage.
The priorities for the 2016 meeting were:
• The Aboriginal Heritage Act; and
• The State remote services reforms.
During the meeting, both women were part of engaging with politicians and talking about issues that affect Aboriginal communities. The discussion about the roadmap for remote communities was informative for the Martu women. Here they got to meet and engage with other language groups from the Pilbara that were also analysing the impacts of the Roadmap on their communities.
