The Martu Living Deserts Project, Warrarnpa Kana, is a conservation project of global significance.

Spanning an area twice the size of Tasmania, the project assists the Martu people of the Western Desert to continue their remarkable connection to country by combining modern scientific land management with traditional indigenous cultural practices.

A partnership between BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa and The Nature Conservancy, the project conserves part of the world’s most intact desert.  Through the project, men and women Martu ranger teams work together with scientists to continue traditional burning practices, control feral pests, rehabilitate water holes and protect threatened species like bilbies and rock-wallabies.
