Wirnpa (Kalyuku Ninti 2023)

During the 2023 Kalyuku Ninti trip, 59 traditional owners from Martu and Kulyakartu native title determinations visited Wirnpa, one of the most powerful ancestral beings of the Jukurrpa (Dreaming). The purpose of the visit was to educate the younger generations about Wirnpa and the importance of respecting and caring for him and Country.

For many Martu, it was their first time visiting Wirnpa, and it gave them a sense of personal and cultural pride to see and care for this Mangunypa (creative being) by cleaning and digging out Wirnpa Soak. For the Elders, Muuki, Meridoo, and Nola, the visit was crucial to pass on the songs, stories, and custodianship of their Country to the younger family members. The three siblings were born in the desert and raised traditionally, living a nomadic lifestyle on this Country. They emphasised to their family the importance of working together and passing on ninti (knowledge) to future generations to help keep Martu culture alive and strong.

Throughout the Kalyuku Ninti trip, Elders guided younger generations, encouraging them to step up as cultural leaders. Emerging Martu leaders had the opportunity to lead different parts of the trip, ensuring everyone's safety and teaching the correct way to carry out cultural activities, such as speaking to Country and cleaning water sources. Family genealogies were also shared, reviewed, and expanded upon, providing a platform for young future leaders to learn about their connection to Country and family. These discussions sparked conversations about the traditional Country walked by the ancestors and the responsibilities each has towards their ancestor's Country.
