Our Programs
KJ’s on-country programs have generated transformative changes across Martu communities. The outcomes span a wide range of social, cultural and economic benefits to both Martu and other stakeholders, such as the state and federal governments.
All programs are based on Martu culture and priorities and aspirations to go back to country, to teach young people about their culture and to look after country, which explains the high levels of engagement in every program. Learn more about Our Impact and our programs below.
Cultural programs
The preservation of culture and language is key in maintaining a rich Martu identity and connection to country. Mapping significant locations, recording oral histories and preserving Martu language are just some of the fundamental ways we work. KJ can also provide cultural awareness training for organisations to help build their understanding of country.
Country programs
These programs manage the conservation of the natural and cultural assets on Martu country through the employment of nearly 300 Martu as Indigenous rangers working out of four communities. They are extending the geographic scope and range of activities using both Martu traditional knowledge and contemporary natural resource management such as fire, feral animal, threatened species, and weed management.
Families program
The Families Program is a holistic approach to supporting Martu to raise their child to be strong, confident members of their community. It recognises the important role all generations have in caring for and teaching young Martu, and therefore works across the age range with the whole family.
Social programs
To create a positive future for Martu, there needs to be effective engagement with mainstream Australia. By understanding how systems work — such as governance, changes to policy, economic development, and the criminal justice system — Martu will gain confidence to support and manage their own communities better.

“Martu created Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa. Martu said what work it should do. Martu were walking around with not much work in the communities. Some went to work with Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa. They got work, they got good money, they got knowledge, they got strong. The feeling inside, their spirit is happy, strong.”
