Returning to Country

During a trip with KJ Martu Rangers from Punmu and Kunawarritji, ranger Braeden shared a powerful story around the campfire. He talked about the advice he received from Clifton, a mentor in the KJ Martu Leadership Program, when he struggled with wama (alcohol) while living in Perth. Clifton told him, “There’s nothing there (in town) for you. You need to see your Country.”

These words inspired Braeden to return to his Country and fully engage in ranger activities, helping to strengthen his cultural identity. Martu cultural values, knowledge and practice inform Martu-led KJ program strategies that support forming a new narrative about being a strong Martu adult in the modern context and provide strength and resilience in overcoming contemporary challenges.
