Detailing the life of the Mulyamitji

In May 2020, the Parnngurr rangers did a mulyamitji (Great Desert Skink) survey at Warntili. With the help of Elders, they located 15 active burrows!

The team installed three cameras and went back in November to check for footage. It was wonderful to get some excellent photos showing a mating pair of mulyamitji

Over the summer period, there was an amazing transformation of the desert’s landscape, with rain filling the Warntili claypan creating an abundance of wildlife and activity.

Footage revealed two young mulyamitji being parented and others sloughing their skin — as well as evidence of dingoes coming close to the burrow. These visitors were joined by frogs foraging in the area after the rain; some becoming a quick bite for the mulyamitji!

It was very exciting to retrieve this very amazing footage detailing the life of the mulyamitji — a wondrous record to have.
